Why work so hard for our BLACK children to be accepted?
Why work to forge our BLACK children to have a relationship with those who don’t want it?
Why demand a seat in rooms we KNOW we aren’t wanted, appreciated, liked, or honored?
What is wrong with us BLACK PEOPLE uniting?
What is wrong with us BLACK TEACHERS teaching our own BLACK children?
What is wrong with BLACK PROFESSIONALS advocating for the those in our inner cities?
What is wrong with going back to segregation?
What is wrong with us doing, being and cultivating us and ours BLACKNESS?
We all know that they are evil, toxic, immoral, unethical and insane and we are FORCING it upon our BLACK children?
When we were segregated and had absolutely nothing, our BLACK educators were producing scholars, brilliance, greatness, exceptionalism, excellence, and sacred values for us and ours. How? They understand humanity, it was a calling, ministry and revolutionary.
Allow me to give you some quotes to reflect on:
“Only a fool will let his enemy teach his children.” Malcolm X
“If I have a cup of coffee that is too strong for me because it is too black, I weaken it by pouring cream into it. I integrate it with cream. If I keep pouring enough cream in the coffee, pretty soon the entire flavor of the coffee is changed, the very nature of the coffee is changed. If enough cream is poured in, eventually you don’t even know that I had coffee in this cup. This is what happened with the March on Washington. The whites didn’t integrate it; they infiltrated it. Whites joined it; they engulfed it; they became so much a part of it, it lost its original flavor. It ceased to be a black march, it ceased to be militant; it ceased to be angry; it ceased to be impatient. In fact, it ceased to be a march.” Malcolm X
“The schools we go to are reflections of the society that created them. Nobody is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them. Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes, if they know that that knowledge will help set you free.” Assata Shakur
Dr. Angela Davis has in her book Freedom Is A Constant Struggle she quotes in full the 10 point plan of Black Panther Party of which are:
“1. We want freed. We want power to determine the destiny of our Black Community. 2. We want full employment for our people. 3. We want an end to the robbery by the white men of our Black Community. (later changed to “we want an end to the robbery by the capitalists of our Black and oppressed communities.) 4. We want decent housing, fit for shelter and human beings. 5. We want education for our people that exposes the true nature of this decadent American society. We want education that teaches us our true history and our role in the present day society. 6. We want all Black men to be exempt from military services. 7. We want an immediate end to POLICE BRUTALITY and MURDER of Black people. 8. We want freedom for all Black men held in federal, state, country and city prisons and jails. 9. We want all Black people when brought to trial to be tried in court by a jury of their peer group and people from their Black Communities, as defined by the Constitution of the United States.
10. We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace.”
“Poor people, people of color-especially are much more likely to be found in prison than in institutions of higher learner.” Dr. Angela Davis
“Prison relieves us of the responsibility of seriously engaging with the problems of our society, especially those produced by racism and, increasingly, global capitalism.” Dr. Angela Davis
“One of the reasons that so many people of color and poor people are in prison is that the deindustrialization of the economy has led to the creation of new economies and the expansion of some old ones. I have already mentioned the drug trade and the market for sexual services. At the same time, though, there are any number of communities that more than welcome prisons as a source of employment. Communities even compete with one another to be the site where new prisons will be constructed because prisons create a significant number of relatively good jobs for their residents.” Dr. Angela Davis
“The de industrialization of the U.S. economy based on the migration of corporations into third world areas where labor is very cheap and thus more profitable for these companies creates on the one hand conditions in those countries that encourage people to emigrate to the U.S. in search of a better life. On the other hand, it creates conditions here that send more Black people into the alternative economies, the drug economies, women into economies in sexual services, and sends them into the prison industrial complex.” Dr. Angela Davis
“Jails and prisons are designed to break human beings, to convert the population into specimens in a zoo-obedient to our keepers, but dangerous to teach other.” Dr. Angela Davis
“When children attend schools that place a greater value on discipline and security than on knowledge and intellectual development, they are attending prep schools for prison.” Dr. Angela Davis
“Prisons do not disappear social problems, they disappear human beings. Homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, mental illness, and illiteracy are only a few of the problems that disappear from public view when the human beings contending with them are regulated to cages.” Dr. Angela Davis
“Imprisonment has become the response of first resort to far too many of our social problems.” Dr. Angela Davis
“We have a school system that is based upon the psychology of White children and White people. We are trying to educate our children in that system; they are bound to fail. The very structure of the educational; system itself is based upon a white model and therefore it has built-in failure mechanism for us, one way or the other.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“The idea that we must necessarily arrive at a point greater than that reached by our ancestors could possibly be an illusion. The idea that somehow according to some great universal principle we are going to be in a better condition than our ancestors is an illusion which often results from not studying history and recognizing that progressions and regressions occur; that integrations and disintegrations occur in history.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“When you do not educate your children to solve the problems that will confront them/us, then they are being miseducated.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“If we don’t know who we are, then we are whoever someone says we are.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“There’s no animal like this BLACK “MIDDLE CLASS” ANIMAL; it thinks because it dresses like white folks, easts like white folks, acts like white folks, talks like white folks, has the same degrees from the same schools like white folks, that means that it’s “EQUAL” WITH WHITE FOLKS…… A CRUEL DECEPTIONS.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“No Black person has ever been taught to think like “WHITE FOLKS.” If you thought like WHITES, you would want your own nation to control, ton control your own neighborhood, to control your own economy, to have your own military, to control the resources in your community. Blacks come out of these schools and universities to be highly educated servants, slaves not in control of their own destiny. You want to remove them from power.” Dr.Amos Wilson
“WE HAVE TO BE MADE DUMB TO EXIST IN THIS SITUATION!” We have been robbed of our common sense, our intellectual capacity, our culture, creativity, and sense of reality. Having been taught to be dumb, Africans will experience a CONSCIOUSNESS, an INTELLECTUAL EXPANSION, a CLARITY of VISION, a SPIRITUAL HARMONY and an INCREASE IN INTELLIGENCE, when we summon the COURAGE to regain and reclaim our AFRICAN IDENTITY, CONSCIOUSNESS, CULTURE AND TIME.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“Integration itself indicates that, wanting to live and be loved and lay around with people who destroyed us and enslaved us, and given us the greatest pain in the world is (mentally unhealthy). In other words the unhealth of the “black” community serves the health and wealth of the “white” community just as the sickness of the drug addict helps the health and wealth of the pusher.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“INTELLIGENCE MUST BE DEFINED IN TERMS OF THE DEGREE IN WHICH IT SOLVES YOUR PROBLEMS! The nature of education today prepares you to solve THEIR PROBLEMS and not your own. That’s why you study THEIR books, go to THEIR schools, you learn THEIR information, THEIR language, THEIR styles, THEIR perceptions, so when you come out of school you can do a humdinger of a job solving Europeans’ problems, but you can’t solve your own. And then you DARE call yourself “intelligent” C’mon.” Dr. Amos Wilson
“Blacks are the only group of people who take their most precious possessions, their children, and ask their oppressors to educate them and to mold and shape their minds.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“The educated Negroes have the attitude of contempt toward their own people because in their own, as well as in their mixed schools, Negroes are taught to admire the Hebrew, the Greek, the Latin and the Teuton and to despise the African.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“The large majority of the Negroes who have put finishing touches of our best colleges are all but worthless in the development of their people.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“African Americans themselves in certain parts join with Euro-Americans, to keep out of schools, teachers who may be bold enough to teach the truth as it is. They usually say the races here are getting along amicably now, and we do not want these peaceful relationships disturbed by teaching of new political thought. What they mean to say with respect to the peaceful relation of the races, then, is that the African Americans have been terrorized to the extent that they are afraid even to discuss political matters publicly.” Dr. Cater G. Woodson
“When a white man sees persons of his own race tending downward to a level of disgrace he does not rest until he works out some plan to lift such unfortunates to higher ground; but the Negro forgets the delinquents of his race and goes his way to feather his own nest, as he has done in leaving the masses in the popular churches.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“The lack of confidence of the African American in himself and in his possibilities is what has kept him down. His miseducation has been a perfect success in this respect.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“In the schools of business administration, Negroes are trained exclusively in the psychology and economics of Wall Street and are, therefore, made to despise the opportunities to run ice wagons, push banana carts, and sell peanuts among their own people. Foreigners, who have not studied economics but have studied Negroes, take up this business and grow rich.” Dr. Cater G. Woodson
“As another has well said, to handicap a student by teaching him that his black face is a curse and that his struggle to change his condition is hopeless is the worst sort of lynching.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“The African Americans will not advance far if they continue to waste their energy abusing those who misdirect and exploit them. The exploiters of the race are not such much at fault as the race itself. If African Americans persist in permitting themselves to be handled in this fashion they will always find some one at hand to impose upon them. The matter is one which rests largely with the African Americans themselves. The race will free itself from exploiters just as soon as it decides to do so. No one else can accomplish this task for the race. It must plan and do for itself.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“Every form of true education trains the student in self reliance.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“We misused Western education, we instead became part of the trap, instead of us using wester education to stay out the trap.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“Nothing the European mind ever devised was meant to do anything but facilitate the European’s control over the world.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“History is not everything, but is a starting point. History is a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is a compass they use to find themselves on the map of human geography. It tells them where they are, but more importantly, what they must be.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“Powerful people will not educate you in how to take power away from them and their schools are not going to give you the kind of education you need. You see my friends and family, miseducation is intentional. Oppressors, exploiters and enslavers fear an educated masses.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“Their evil genius is their ability to drain the diseased pus of their political sores on the land of other peoples. With consistency they have attempted to solve their problems at other people’s expense.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“The students obligation was to build upon the previous generations work to find what is missing, omitted (intentionally or not) neglected, and flat out incorrect, so we can make the necessary changes for the following generations.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Education without morals is like a ship without a compass, merely wandering nowhere.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Black folks, teach your children that they are direct descendants of the greatest and proudest race who ever peopled the earth; ant it is because of the fear of our return to power, in a civilization of our own, that may outshine others, why we are hated and kept down by a jealous and prejudice temporary world.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“We are either on the way to a higher racial existence or racial extermination.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don’t.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“Having had the wrong kind of education, the Negro has become his own greatest enemy.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“The thing to do is to get organized; keep separated and you will be exploited, you will be robbed, you will be killed. get organized and yo will compel the world to respect you.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
““The Negro who has had the benefit of an education of forty, thirty and twenty years ago, is the greatest fraud and stumbling block to the real progress of the race. He was educated with the wrong psychology and perspective. He indulged the belief, and carried out the practice, that to be a man, and be great, is to exploit the less fortunate members of his race, barter their rights economically and politically, and then with the attendant success, seek to escape the race through an underground current of miscegenation.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“The majority of our educated Negroes pride themselves upon being very conservative, which is only another way of admitting that they are not progressive or are too lazy to think for themselves, or that, in spite of the years spent behind the walls of college and university, they suffer from that prevalent disease known as vacuity of mind.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“I had a motive and a purpose; it was not the money, I could have gotten that for myself and been satisficed, it was not the position because I could have got that for myself. What was it? It was the crying voice from the grave that said, “Garvey, we have suffered for 250 years for your day and for your time; we expect something from you at this time.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“Having had the wrong education as a start in his racial career, the negro has become his own greatest enemy. Most of the trouble I have had in advancing the cause of the race has come from negroes. Booker Washington aptly described the race in one of his lectures by stating that we were like crabs in a barrel, that none would allow the other to climb over, but on any such attempt all would continue to pull back into the barrel the one crab that would make the effort to climb out. Yet, those of us with vision cannot desert the race, leaving it to suffer and die.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“A people without knowledge of the past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“If you have no confidence in self you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence you have won even before you have started” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“You discover that the education the Negro gets is designed to keep him subservient. The poor Black man is exploited by whites and by educated Negroes, too.” Medgar Evers
Muhammad Ali‘s advice to his daughters “Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to. Where do you find diamonds? Deep down in the ground, covered and protected. Where do you find pearls? Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, covered up and protected in a beautiful shell. Where do you find gold? Way down in the mine, covered over with layers and layers of rock. You’ve got to work hard to get to them.” He looked at me with serious eyes. “Your body is sacred. You’re far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too.”
“A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him.” James Baldwin
“Now if I were a teacher in this school, or any Negro school, and I was dealing with Negro children, who were in my care only a few hours of every day and would then return to their homes and to the streets, children who have an apprehension of their future which with every hour grows grimmer and darker, I would try to teach them – I would try to make them know – that those streets, those houses, those dangers, those agonies by which they are surrounded, are criminal. I would try to make each child know that these things are the result of a criminal conspiracy to destroy him. I would teach him that if he intends to get to be a man, he must at once decide that his is stronger than this conspiracy and they he must never make his peace with it. And that one of his weapons for refusing to make his peace with it and for destroying it depends on what he decides he is worth. I would teach him that there are currently very few standards in this country which are worth a man’s respect. That it is up to him to change these standards for the sake of the life and the health of the country. I would suggest to him that the popular culture – as represented, for example, on television and in comic books and in movies – is based on fantasies created by very ill people, and he must be aware that these are fantasies that have nothing to do with reality. I would teach him that the press he reads is not as free as it says it is – and that he can do something about that, too. I would try to make him know that just as American history is longer, larger, more various, more beautiful and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it, so is the world larger, more daring, more beautiful and more terrible, but principally larger – and that it belongs to him. I would teach him that he doesn’t have to be bound by the expediencies of any given administration, any given policy, any given morality; that he has the right and the necessity to examine everything. I would try to show him that one has not learned anything about Castro when one says, “He is a Communist.” This is a way of his learning something about Castro, something about Cuba, something, in time, about the world. I would suggest to him that his is living, at the moment, in an enormous province. America is not the world and if America is going to become a nation, she must find a way – and this child must help her to find a way to use the tremendous potential and tremendous energy which this child represents. If this country does not find a way to use that energy, it will be destroyed by that energy.” James Baldwin
