She was a Rock Warrior.
She taught children from the inner city speech.
She was articulate, had perfect diction and spoke eloquently. When she walked the halls, you knew it. She didn’t look like all the other teachers.
She was not to be boxed in, she was not to be controlled, she understood who she was but most importantly no one could dispute her professionalism, she influence and impact on our lives.
Today, we have women lib, women are owning their decisions, bodies, and lives and to some it’s liberating but when I think of women like Mrs. Susie Chieke, her kind of educators lived it, she was a revolutionary woman before I knew what it was.
Mrs. Check embodied the scripture I am fearfully and wonderfully made, she knew who she was in Christ and was never apologetic for who she was, how she presented herself or any position she stood upon.
It’s educators such as she that invested in, impacted and influenced me to not only go into the profession but understand we are the ones that must fight against these oppressive, regressive and suppressive systems.
Because of her I chose to take her mantle to keep us marching to the light and liberation.
