Assata Shakur Message to My Sistas
Message to My Sistas
By Assata Shakur, 11 March 2005
At this time I’d like to say a few words especially to my sisters: SISTERS. BLACK PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE FREE UNLESS BLACK WOMEN PARTICIPATE IN EVERY ASPECT OF OUR STRUGGLE, ON EVERY LEVEL OF OUR STRUGGLE. I think that Black women, more than anybody on the face of the earth, recognize the urgency of our situation. Because it is We who come face to face daily with the institutions of our oppression. And because it is We who have borne the major responsibility of raising our children. And it is We who have to deal with the welfare systems that do not care about the welfare of our children. And it is We who have to deal with the school systems that do not educate our children. It is We who have to deal with the racist teachers who teach our children to hate themselves. It is We who have seen the terrible effects of racism on our children. I JUST WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT OUT TO EXPRESS MY LOVE TO ALL OF YOU WHO RISK YOUR LIVES DAILY STRUGGLING OUT HERE ON THE FRONT LINES. We who have watched our young grow too old, too soon. We who have watched our children come home angry and frustrated and seen them grow more bitter, more disillusioned with the passing of each day. And We who have seen the sick, trapped look on the faces of our children when they come to fully realize what it means to be Black in Amerikkka. And we know what deprivation is. How many times have We run out of bus fare, rent money, food money and how many times have our children gone to school in hand-me-down clothes, with holes in their shoes. We know what a hell-hole Amerikkka is. We’re afraid to let our children go out and play. We’re afraid to walk the streets at night. We sisters, We have seen our young, the babies that We brought into this world with such great hopes for, We have seen their bodies bloated and aching from drugs, scarred and deformed by bullet holes. We know what oppression is. We have been abused in every way imaginable. We have been abused economically, politically. We have been abused physically, and We have been abused sexually. And sisters, We have a long and glorious history of struggle on this land/planet. Afrikan women were strong and courageous warriors long before We came to this country in chains. And here in Amerikkka, our sisters have been on the front lines. Sister Harriet Tubman led the underground railroad. And sisters like Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hammer, Sandra Pratt and our Queen Mother Moore have carried it on. Sisters, We have been the backbone of our communities, and We have got to be the backbone of our nation. We have got to build strong family units, based on love and struggle. We don’t have no time to play around.
A REVOLUTIONARY WOMAN CAN’T HAVE NO REACTIONARY MAN.
If he’s not about liberation, if he’s not about struggle, if he ain’t about building a strong Black nation then he ain’t about nothing. We know how to struggle. We know how to struggle and finagle to survive. We know what it means, sisters, to struggle tooth and nail. We know what it means to struggle with love. We know what unity is. We know what sisterhood is. We have always been kind to each other, brought each other hot soup and biscuits. We have always helped each other through the hard times. Sisters, We must celebrate Afrikan womanhood. We don’t want to be like Miss Ann. She can keep her false eyelashes and her false, despoiled image of womanhood. She can keep her mink stole and her French provincial furniture. We will define for ourselves what womanhood is. And We will create our own style and our own ways of dress. We can’t have no white man in France telling Afrikan women what to look like. We will create our own New Afrikan way of living. We will create our own way of being and living our own New Afrikan culture, taking the best of the old and mixing it with the new.
SISTERS WE HAVE GOT TO TAKE CONTROL OF OUR LIVES AND OUR FUTURE WHEREVER WE ARE. AND WE HAVE GOT TO ORGANIZE OURSELVES INTO A STRONG BODY OF AFRIKAN WOMEN
To Testa Buck!
I got great enjoyment in listening to your GRANDS speak on when you all lived with them and how they spoiled you all, never listened to the instructions of my sis Layne and loved you boys being with them.
Where is that time?
We have worked so hard to detach, move away from and disassociate with what those OLD PEOPLE did, who they were and what we thought they were about, it is destroying their legacy.
This right here, is not in order for sure!
Take time out and as I am confident you are doing and travel down memory lane, not as a father but lad…..
Look how far you have come.
You have reached so many of ya potnas, even if you know it or not, you have been a light and guild, you have touched a lot of people on this your journey to manhood.
You would say you would get back to this, that and the other but the workaholic in you wouldn’t allow you, you were a provider but at what expense?
This is a season and moment of STANDING, REFLECTING, and REXAMINING for sure.
I want to thank you for being a beacon of light for not only your siblings but the men in your family who are STRONG MEN because of you and your example.
I know it was that old man that sit at the head of that table that was your guide, gps, and map.

Thank you for being one they could count on.
Thank you for living out your testimony, because God has taken you through a plethora of tests and well, look at you now!
Thank you for uplifting, encouraging, motivation, sacrificing, and assuring those in your circle.
Thank you for doing all that you did and could because, you honestly understood that only GOD has and holds time and we don’t and can’t.
Thank you for going through your life’s maze and it was those twists and turns that you proved is indeed doable.
Thank you for understanding the well done thy good and faithful servant, even if you don’t see it, want to hear it or believe it
You have influenced, impacted others because of what you carried and how you carried it. It was your wisdom, education, exposure, knowledge, exposure, humor, dignity, class, compassion and frankness that drew people to you and you altered their lives.
Thank you for not only being a doting dad but a dad who showed much love, care and concern by what you did to make sure your family was all good.
YOU were the catalyst of your children to hone their gifts, skills, talents and purpose and now you get a set on the sideline of their lives as they bring them to fruition even in this time, you can see and enjoy the fruit of your labor.
You saw your children
You heard your children
You believed in your children
You felt your children
You bonded with your children
YOU were the epitome of a great dad.
I know your heart is broken
I know you are in pain
I know you are filled with sorrow
I also know that WOMAN NAME MARY has a shoulder for you to lean on! That would be an HONOR for her to have you to do that and be there.
Keep your BOND MANLY ways of character, grace, dignity, class and elegance even during this dark time.
THANK YOU MR. TRUMP

DEGREES, CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, MANDATES, CODES AND LEGISLATIONS WERE ALL USED TO LEGALLY DENY, OMIT, REJECT, AND EXCLUDE BLACK PEOPLE. THEY ATTACHED FEES TO THEM AS WE WERE INTENTIONALLY LEGISLATED LOW WAGES TO PUT THOSE THINGS OUT OF REACH.

WE SHOULD NO LONGER CHOOSE TO BE IGNORANT
WE SHOULD NO LONGER CHOOSE TO BE DISMISIVE
WE SHOULD NO LONGER CHOOSE TO NOT SEE, LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND
WE HAVE ALWAYS MOVED LIKE CHAMILLIONS AS A BLACK PEOPLE
WE HAVE ALWAYS NOT BOASTED OUR MOVES
WE HAVE ALWAYS NOT SHARED OUR MOTIVES
WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN QUALIFIED, EXPERIENCED, THE PERFECT FIT AND THE TOP CHOICE
WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD TO BE AND KEEP QUIET AND ALLOW OUR WORK AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS SPEAK FOR US
WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ATTACKED, LOOKED OVER, REJECTED, OMITED, EXCLUDED, DISCRIMINATED AGAINST AND DIVIDED INTO CLASSES AND TRUMP HAS UP 4 FINGERS AND ASKING US TO LOOK, LISTEN AND LEARN.
I REFUSE TO ALLOW THIS SEASON, MOMENT AND TIME TO BACKFIRE ON OUR TRUTH AND HISTORY AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A PEOPLE WHO WERE DENIED THE RIGHT TO READ, AND WRITE.
I AM READING AND LISTENING TO WHAT DONALD TRUMP IS SAYING AND NOT SAYING AND THIS IS RIGHT ON TIME
HE IS BEING BRILLIANT BUT NOT REALIZING THAT HE IS…..LOL
HE IS SHOWING US JUST HOW WEAK, INCOMPETENT, INFERIOR, IGNORANT AND ILLITERATE THEY ARE AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN
HE HAS FIRED OUR TOP, HIGHLY SCHOLASTIC, BRILLIANT, CREATIVE, GIFTED AND TALENTED LEADERS BECAUSE, BLACKS SHOULD NEVER BEEN SUPERIOR TO WHITES, BETTER THAN WHITES AND MORE INTELLECTUALLY ASTUATE THAN WHITES AND WE ARE AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN, THIS IS WHY THEY HAVE ALWAYS LEGISLATED US LACK, POVERTY, HOMELESSNESS, IGNORANCE, ILLITERACY AND NOT ENOUGH.
HE IS SHOWING US THAT THE TIME OF BLACKS BEING SEEN AS, TREATED AS PROVERTY HAS COME TO AN END
HE IS SHOWING US THAT EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, PASSION, DRIVE, FORTITUDE, AND POSITIVITY MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LESS THAN, LOW, AND INCOMPETENT AND NEEDED US TO ELEVATE, ADVANCE, PROGRESS, ILLUMINATE AND ASSURE THEM OF GOODNESS AND GREATNESS THROUGH OUR CONFIDENCE AND ABILITIES.
HE IS PROVING THAT WE HAVE NEVER BEEN LESS THAN HUMAN, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN IGNORNAT, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN INFERIOR, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN WEAK, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN NEEDY, WE HAVE NEVER BEEN THEM.
HE IS PROVING THAT COLONIZATION WILL INDEED DESTROY THE COUNTRY WITHOUT US
HE IS PROVING THAT JUST AS ALL OF HIS BUSINESS ENDEVOURS, HE WILL ALSO BANKRUPT AND RUN AMERICA INTO THE GROUND
HE IS PROVING THAT WHEN IT COMES TO DOMESTICIATION, THIS COUNTRY WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO STAND WITHOUT BLACK LABOR, BLACK INTELLECTUALISM, BLACK STRENGTH, BLACK CONTRIBUTIONS AND BLACK ATHLETICISM.
HE IS PROVING THAT OUR OBSTACLES, HARDSHIPS, POVERTY, OVERT AND COVERT RACIST LAWS, RULES, CODES, MANDATES, POLICIES AND LEGISLATIONS, OPPRESSION, NOT ENOUGH, LACK, HOMELESSNESS, HUNGER AND SO MANY OTHER SOCIAL ILLS ARE ALL BY DESIGN AND NOT AUTOMATIC. IT IS INDEED MAN MADE AND WILL END WITH US.
HE IS PROVING THAT THESE RACIST LAWS, RULES, CODES, MANDATES, LEGISLATIONS AND POLICIES ARE ALL IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE WE CAN’T PARTICIPATE, COMPETE, CONTRIBUTE OR DOMINATE.
HE IS PROVING THAT WE ARE FROMA LONG LINEAGE OF MENTALLY STRONG, CONFIDENT, RESILIENT, BRILLIANT, CREATIVE, SKILLED, SCHOLASTIC PEOPLE AND TODAY, WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR FREEDOM, JUSTICE AND RIGHTS BUT TAKING THEM BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BELONG TO THEM.
HE IS PROVING JUST HOW MENTALLY CHAINED THEY HAVE US AND WE MUST RELEASE OUR SELF DOUBT, OUR ABILITY TO UNIFY, OUR REASONS TO LOOK AT OUR OWN SISTERS AND BROTHERS AND BELIEF IN THIS LESS, LITTLE AND NOT AT ALL.
HE IS PROVING TO US THAT WE HAVE OUR ANCESTORS WITHIN OUR BLOOD AND WE MUST EMBODY THEIR WISHES, DESIRES AND HOPE FOR OUR PEOPLE
HE IS PROVING TO US THE POWER IN OUR HATRED AND MISTRUST AND MISLEADERSHIP TO KEEP THEM AFLOAT AND “SUPREME.”
HE IS PROVING TO US THAT ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT LOOK GOOD OR MAKE LOGICAL SENSE, OUR ELDERS WERE A PEOPLE OF ELEGANCE, CLASS, LOGIC, CLARITY, DETERMINATION, COMPOSURE, CONFIDENCE, INTEGRITY AND DIGNITY AND WE MUST GET BACK TO THAT PLACE.

IN AMERICA, NURSING DEGREES, LAW DEGREES, EDUCATION DEGREES, ALL OTHER PROFESSIONAL DEGREES WERE A NON FACTOR UNTIL WE BLACK STARTED TO OBTAIN THEM EN MASSES AND NOT ONLY OBTAIN THEM BUT BE SUPERIOR, EXCEPTIONAL, EXCELLENT, NOBEL, AND DISPELLING ALL OF THE ODDS AND MYTHS OF US AND OURS AFTER 400 YEARS OF SHOWING OUR DOMINANCE AND EXPERTISE.

Thank You Trump for Isaiah 55:8-9
Trump, thank you for taking away these titles

History may be withheld by legislating but yet it is being resurrection anyway
Yet it is being made visible anyway
Yet it is being made known how wicked, vicious, malignant, disrespectful, incompetent, weak and wicked you and your kind has always been.
“We need the historian and philosopher to give us with trenchant pen, the story of our forefathers, and let our soul and body, with phosphorescent light, brighten the chasm that separates us. We should cling to them just as blood is thicker than water.” Arturo Alfonso Schomburg
“If Africans and their diaspora were truly inferior, it would be unnecessary to rewrite their history, obfuscate their accomplishments, and work for 400 years to limit their futures.” Dr
Douglas S. Shipley
“The American Negro must rebuild his past in order to make his future. Though it is orthodox to think of America as the one country where it is unnecessary to have a past, what is a luxury for the nation as a whole becomes a prime social necessity for the Negro. For him, a group tradition must supply compensation for persecution, and pride of race the antidote for prejudice. History must restore what slavery took away, for it is the social damage of slavery that the present generation must repair and offset.”
Arturo Alfonso Schomburg
“History is not a game of remembrance. It is an instrument of power.” Dr. Amos Wilson

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Dr. Marcus Garvey
“Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated” Dr. Carter G. Woodson

Thanks Granny of the Movement
Because of your mom, Dr. Sattlefield (sp), you are, can, did and do…….
Because of your mom, Dr. Sattlefield (sp), you understand the importance of not only accountability but empathy, compassion, giving and restoration
Because of your mom, Dr. Sattlefield (sp) you embody MY BROTHER’S AND SISTER’S KEEPER
Because of your mom, Dr. Sattlefield (sp), you clothe yourself in the powerful lyrics of “IF I CAN HELP SOMEBODY, AS I PASS ALONG, IF I CAN CHEER SOMEBODY WITH A WORD OR A SONG, IF I CAN SHOW SOMEBODY THAT SHE/HE IS TRAVELING WRONG THEN MY LIVING WILL NOT BE IN VAIN.”
Here reflecting on the authentic intellectualism, brilliance, creativity, skills, unity, love, support, comradery, family and selflessness during the Ferguson Uprising.
It was our coveted BLACK elders who we honored, respected, loved, needed and expected to direct, redirect, instruct and reprimand the novice who had the fortitude, strength, confidence and boldness.
I am also reflecting on your mom, THE DR. SATTELSFIELD (sp) and the season she is on this journey called life and I wanted to in turn give you flowers to give to her from me and the girls and also give you the needed strength, grace, prayers, compassion and love just as you and your mom did the young on the front lines of Ferguson.
I need you, you need me is MORE than a feel good song but our AFRICAN MOTTO OF UBUNTU.
Elizabeth, the question was asked, “WHAT GOOD CAN COME OUT OF NAZARETH?”
Allow me to share with you an excerpt from the book, “Showing Mary” by Dr. Renita J. Weems:
“Wherever Elizabeth is, she is not far from where I am right this moment.
SHOW her to me.
SHOW me to her.
SHOW us to each other.
I thank you for the loyalty and the love of the Elizabeths I already have in m life. Deepen those bonds so we might continue to grow together. But for the secret parts of me that are on the verge of being born, send NEW Elizabeths to help midwife them and show me how to do the same for them. God I am ready!” Showing Mary
I just wanted to encourage you to spend more time at your (personal Elizabeth) mom’s feet.
Never miss an opportunity to sit under her rich and honest tutelage.
Get the tea as she clocks it and you enjoy the cool breeze of her shade of wisdom and humor.
Always take in every breath.
The Mary’s you met and encountered during the Ferguson Uprising seemingly was left in the dusk.
Elizabeth was a woman who understood, experienced, was highly educated, shared, poured into, invested in, believed in, assured, and made sure that Mary knew what she had within.
“We’ve been conditioned to think that only politicians can solve our problems. But at some point, maybe we will wake-up and recognize that it was the politicians who created our problems.” Dr. Ben Carson
“Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom.” Nelson Mandela

“If you wish to know how civilized a culture is, look at how they treat its woman.” Bacha Khan
“If you are in a country that’s progressive, the woman is progressive. If you are in a country that reflects the consciousness toward the importance of education, it is because the women are aware of the importance of education. But in every backward country you’ll find the women are backward, and in every country where education is not stressed it’s because the women don’t have education.” Malcolm X
“Next to God we are indebted to women, first for life itself, and then for making it worth living.” Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune
“But what of Black women? I most sincerely doubt if any other race of women could have brought its fineness up through so devilish a fire.” W.E.B. DuBois
“Whatever glory belongs to the race for a development unprecedented in history for the given length of time, a full share belongs to the womanhood of the race.’ Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune
“In Africa, the woman’s ‘place’ was not only with her family; she often ruled nations with unquestionable authority. Many African women were great militarists, and on occasions lead their armies in battle. The Africans had produced a civilization where men were secure enough to let women advance as far as their talent, royal lineage and prerogative would take them.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“It was in Africa where we gave women something which we internally conceded that was hers all along reverence and equality.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“People get used to anything. The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free, you have to be acutely aware of being a slave.” Assata Shakur
The SAME BLACK PEOPLE who conceived, raised, nursed, protected, cooked, cleaned, invented, innovated, healed, mended and was the cash cow for white elevation, progress and advancement?
“We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat. That’s dynamite! We have to be selective on who we allow [to go through higher education].” Ronald Reagan
“Tuition must be accompanied by adequate loans to be paid back after graduation. Students, rather than taxes, should pay for higher education.” Ronald Reagan
“We will always hide the divine truth from them, that we are all one. That he must never know! They must never know that color is an illusion, they must always believe that they are not equal. Drop by drop, drop by drop we will advance our goal. We will take over their lands, resources and wealth to exercise control over them. We will trick them into accepting laws that will steal the little freedom they have. We will set up a money system that will shut them down forever, keeping them and their children in debt.” John D. Rockefeller
“They mocked Charlie Kirk for being a community college drop out but was a millionaire when he died.” Marshata Caradine, Projects 2 Pinnacle, LLC
“Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, I believe that you must become its soul.” Coretta Scott King
“As Black women, we’ve been conditioned to strive for advanced degrees to ensure we’ll be well-paid. Now we’re the most educated group and among the most burdened by debt and wage inequality. It was all a setup. Tom don’t have no Master’s degree and makes double your salary.” Cinneah of Flynanced
“But it is imperative to our struggle that we build a strong Black women’s movement. It is imperative that we, as Black women, talk about the experiences that shaped us; that we assess our strengths and weaknesses and define our own history. It is imperative that we discuss positive ways to teach and socialize our children.* Assata Shakur
“Black folks right now hold the greatest academic achievement on the earth. For 360 years, it was against the law to be caught teaching a Black to read and write. It would cause you 39 lashes and 100 to teach a Black person how to read and write and that was all the way up to the 1860’s. So in 1860’s when Black folks come out of slavery, you gotta understand 96% of Black folks could not read and write. Between 1865 to 1895 Black folks reduced their illiteracy rate from 190% to 40%. They did it by themselves basically. They hold the record of achievement. No body in the history of the world has every come out of slavery and be able to reduce their illiteracy rate by half in 30 year time period.” Dr. Claud Anderson
“Without US there would be NO USa, literally.” Marshata Caradine, Projects 2 Pinnacle, LLC

“For these are all our children, we will all profit by or pay for what they become.” James Baldwin
“African-Americans themselves in certain parts join with Euro-Americans, to keep out of school, teachers who may be bold enough to teach the truth as it is. They usually say the races here are getting along amicably now, and we do not want these peaceful relationships disturbed by teaching of new political thought. What they mean to say with respect to the peaceful relation of the races, then, is that the African-Americans have been terrorized to the extent that they are afraid even to discuss political matters publicly.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson
“Our children lack a clear and meaningful identity, purpose and direction because we do not control the institutions that educate and socialize them. No one will do the important cultural things for us. We must do them for themselves.” Dr. Asa Hilliard
“There is no European solution for African Problems.” Dr. John Henrik Clarke
“BLACK children are our most valuable possession and our greatest potential resource. Any meaningful discussion of the survival or the future of Black people must be predicated upon BLACK people’s plan for the maximal development of ALL BLACK children. Children are the only future of any people. If the children’s lives are squandered, and if the children of a people are not fully developed at whatever cost and sacrifice the people will have cosigned themselves to certain death. They will be destroyed from without and from within by the attack of their own children against them. And they may be destroyed by both. Dr. Frances Cress Welsing
“Your actual Ph.D., the one you earn through many years of graduate school, that’s the promise that you will one day do something great BUT the HONORARY DEGREE is the EVIDENCE that you have.” Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson

Our BLACK children understand proxy
Our BLACK children understand going around systems to get on sites they are not permitted.
Why must we educators criminalize them instead of celebrate their brilliance, creativity, innocence, innovation, ingenuity and genius?
I don’t see them as being disrespectful, defiant, lawless and criminal because I know that if the hue was right and income higher, our children would be called prodigies, gifted and given unimaginable access, opportunities interns and exposure with salaries attached for doing the same thing.
White students have been TAUGHT to do what our inner city children have had to teach themselves to do.
Talking with a colleague of mine on yesterday about Financial Literacy, I asked her:
WHY WOULD ANYONE teach inner city students about FINANCES when they benefit, profit and gain generational wealth off of their legislated financial illiteracy?
WHY WOULD ANYONE teach inner city students about SAVINGS when they spend EVERY dollar and scenr they have?
WHY WOULD ANYONE teach inner city students our history so they could know if they did it then CLEARLY they could do it today?
WHY WOULD ANYONE teach inner city students the power of our love, trust, investment and unity in each other and exclude literally EVERYONE OUTSIDE OF OUR BLACKNESS OF FINANCIAL GAIN?
STOP IT AMERICA
Safety check?
Yet America literally LEGISLATE crime ridden communities, drug infested communities, education malpractice, racist immigrants selling these ammo and drugs to our brilliant Black babies and America told Momma, Dad and Big Mamma they can’t discipline, touch, search, say anything, do anything they don’t want or like, be redirected or corrected?
They told our children they have RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS.
Yeo, they have a RIGHT to defy, be rude, disrespect us; their BLACK caregivers, parents and educators but FREE to be pushed inside of these prisons who NEED filling by BLACK bodies.
